Repetition

I am not sure why but it really annoys me the way Salinger writes for Holden. Salinger constantly repeats words or phrases over and over. I often find my self lost and confused because I think that I have read the same line 3 times, when actually it is like that. Does anyone else feel this way?! When I read this it makes me feel as though Holden is not very smart because he repeats himself constantly and because his vocab is very small. What do you guys think? Why would J.D. Salinger write like this?

  1. I know what you mean. I think J.D is just trying to make a realistic character. He has Holden lose his train of thought and get onto a different topic, then he'll wind up repeating himself of what he has already said. i find it way annoying also, cuz i have to look up to see if i accidentally read the same line again. Salinger might also be trying to make us sympathize with Holden by making his vocabulary small. The readers look at his comments and say, awww the little boy hardly knows words. which makes the reader see innocence in him.
